London

London is a busy, vibrant and exciting city; as culturally rich and socially electric as they come. From the glossy, celebrity-magnet clubs of Mayfair to the edgy urban hang-outs in the east, every taste is catered for, and whether your idea of a good evening out involves chic hotel bars, old school cocktail lounges or, of course, the good old British pub, you won’t be disappointed.

Just like New York, London is full of fashionable girls, celebrities and generally fab folks who want to party (and even some famous Royals). But London is even more so about who you know. Most of the hottest places require membership, and they are very strict about it. So how can you get in? Either become a member yourself, make friends with existing members, or find out the main promoter of a venue and enter with them. The prominent London promoters seem to have more pulling power than their counterparts in New York. Try the usual doorman tricks to obtain their approval. Dressing smart and promising to drop a wad on champagne wouldn’t hurt either.

Paris

Paris nightlife has been legendary for over a century. From the Moulin Rouge, to Josephine Baker to the Whiskey A Go Go, Paris has set the scene for quite some time. Unlike London with its abundance of private clubs or Los Angeles with its endless supply of C-listers cutting you in line, Paris is all about style. The right look and the right attitude can be your carte blanche to the world’s most glamorous and stylish night clubs.

Now the bad news: the city shuts down early, so many used to 24-hour access will hit a lot of walls in Paris. Another late night scarcity? Transportation. The metro closes around 1 AM at the latest, and cabs are particularly hard to get. Remember in Paris, you can’t hail a cab on the street; instead you have to walk to taxi station first, which is already idiotic. There are plenty of gypsy cabs who will take you where you need to go, but at a cost, of course. But what you’re missing in convenience will certainly be made up with the scope of nightlife available to the Parisian partier as the level of glamour and style is unparalleled.

Cannes

Cannes is a cornerstone of the French Riviera, best known for its annual film festival, an event that has made the town a favored vacation spot for the Hollywood elite. The waterfront boulevard of La Croisette, meets every classic ideal of the French Riviera from cultured terrace cafes to designer boutiques and palatial resorts. Modern design schemes are built to blend with grand villas that have stood for centuries. Palm Beach and a handful of other paradises populate the shoreline. The tourism picks up in May with the start of the film festival and lasts all summer long, bringing with it a thriving nightclub scene full of beach-goers, celebrities, socialites and tastemakers. But while the town is a staple of world travel, tourism does fall off after the summer ends. At the start of fall, many of Cannes’ most beloved venues close their doors until the year after. Just the same, plenty of classic clubs maintain themselves year round and events like the Carnival on the Riviera keep this charmed old town limber for the start of May.

Note:Night Box currently includes the latest venues opened in May 2011 for the Cannes Film Festival.

Mykonos

This popular Greek island in the Aegean archipelago has an area of 100 km2 (40 square miles) with a local population of about 10,000. In the 1950’s, Mykonos was a struggling fishing town but it was revitalized by a tourist boom that has yet to slow. The perception that Mykonos is for out-of-control teenagers or for fabulous gays is completely invalid– we have Ibiza and Fire Island respectively for those two groups! In fact, Mykonos has become the travel spot of many jetsetters and socialites from Europe and elsewhere. With non-stop (and inexpensive) flights from many Western European cities, it’s even easier to get there.

Mykonos has grown into a hub for luxury resorts and cabana parties, boasting some of the best bars and clubs on the Greek islands. For those particularly looking for the nightlife scene, accommodations near the main village are the most convenient and will avoid the hassles of private cars and taxis. Everything from disco to pop resonates off the whitewashed walls of the clubs. No matter what time of day or night, cocktails and dancing are somewhere to be found on the winding walkways.
